Neuro-Linguistic Programming: Reprogram Your Mind To Live Your Best Life With Yanet Borrego

A Political Asylum

After my mom and I asked for political asylum, there was a gap of twelve years when we actually didn't go back to Cuba because of course my mom was afraid of what could happen since asking for political asylum. In Cuba’s eyes, it wasn't legal. There was this gap of twelve years where we didn't get to see my family. My grandmother, my uncle and my dad saw me when I was 12, then when I was 24, and that happened right after I graduated from college from my Chemical Engineering degree.

I remember telling my mom, “We are going to go back to Cuba because we haven't seen our family in twelve years.” She was a little bit scared, but she agreed, so we asked for permission. The permission was given for us to go back to Cuba. Finally, the day arrived. I remember it because it was right before starting my first corporate job. I knew I was going to have just ten days in my first full-time job, so I wanted to make sure I went to Cuba before that because I wanted to spend more than ten days with my family that I hadn't seen for more than a decade.

We went to Cuba and we saw our family. I still have a picture of all us celebrating that we were reunited for a temporary time, but at least we had that opportunity to go back and visit every year. That was something that I promised myself and I committed to doing, to visit my family every year. I did that until 2020 that I couldn't go back of course because of COVID. A lot of things happened, so I haven't been able to go back, but my mom has.

When I went to Cuba, my uncle, and he is someone that I mention on this show over and over. My uncle was someone who had a huge influence to myself. He was a paternal figure for me. When I was a kid in Cuba, after coming back from school to home, he would always sit with me and he would teach me the multiplication tables. He would do the homework with me. He was someone that I deeply admired. He was a very intelligent man. He had two Engineering degrees. He went to the military. He was someone that I really admire.

Neuro-linguistic Programming

Twelve years after me and my mom not seeing him, he had changed a lot. He had become a lot more spiritual and more involved into personal development. I remember going back to my house in Cuba and see hundreds of books that he had read. One of the first books that he mentioned to me was a book from Tony Robbins, Awaken The Giant Within. If you're in the personal development field, I'm pretty sure you have heard of Tony Robbins because everyone knows about him.

It's never too late to rewrite your story.

He gave me this book, and it was written in Spanish because he was in Cuba. With this book, he also, for the first time, mentioned NLP or Neuro-Linguistic Programming. He gave me a second book about an introduction to NLP in Spanish. Reading from the Spanish guy that I honestly I never heard of, but I still have the book in my library, and I love it. It was so helpful.

That was the first time I had heard of Neuro-Linguistic Programming. He gave me a quick explanation of what it was. He told me, “Yanet, this is going to be so helpful and important for you to achieve your highest potential, for you to be able to understand your mental and emotional strength, and even the components of that in your whole being at a greater level. It’s going to play a big role with your spiritual and physical bodies too because at the end of the day, we are just one person.”

That's why even in my coaching practice, when I work with my clients, we work through all the aspects, physical, spiritual, mental and emotional. I was very impressed with my uncle. I was like, “He has such a greater understanding of the human being,” which before, he was different. He was just more rational and very disciplined and would have read it with structure. In the last years, he had grown so much to better understand himself and improve on himself in ways that he had never experienced. At that time, I think he was around 47 years old or 50 years old. That's why I always say it's never too late to rewrite your story. He was doing it back then.

He taught me about NLP in Cuba. I heard NLP for the first time from my uncle. Right after I started working on my corporate job, I continued reading Tony Robbins. I went to one of his events. I realized how much of Neuro-Linguistic Programming was involved in his events, and honestly everything around us.

To give you a quick definition of what NLP or Neuro-Linguistic Programming stands for. Neuro-Linguistic Programming is basically understanding the language of your mind so you can achieve your desired outcome in a consistent basis, and so you can create sustainable change. As I've mentioned before, our minds are mega-computers, mainly the subconscious mind, which is the one doing most of the work. Right now, if you're reading this episode, you're breathing. You are not even having to think about breathing. Your subconscious mind is doing it for you.

The subconscious mind is the one that operates 95% of the things that you know, and you're not even conscious about it. It's operating on the background, making sure that you're walking the path that you have decided to walk. Even in that subconscious mind, based on our past experiences and significant emotionally bends that we have had in our lives, we have also built on desired limiting beliefs. We have also built negative emotions and a lot of baggage that we bring into the present moment.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming provides the tools for you to let go of that baggage and even start reprogramming your habits and everything else that is preventing you from living a life with fulfillment, happiness and clarity. I am an engineer. That's what I studied as a profession. I remember when I started studying NLP on the side after I started to work on my first corporate job, I said to myself, “I need to study things that I truly can understand.”

What I loved about Neuro-Linguistic Programming is that it's a very detailed approach, where the individual and the practitioner have the opportunity to learn at the deepest level, how the mind works and how you can utilize the code of the mind, so you can write a program that will lead you to achieve the desired results.

I have this analogy of the mind being a mega super computer. In every computer, there is a code running the programs. Behind Excel, behind Word, even behind your podcast application on your phone, there is a coding that’s making sure that application is delivering on what it's promised the user to deliver. The mind is the same thing.

This code, this programming is understood through Neuro-Linguistic Programming. It’s a very detailed approach for you to understand how you can overcome your passable leaves and your programming so you can design the life you deserve to live. There are many applications to NLP. I'm going to give you a couple, but honestly, it's one of the tools along with energy healing and hypnosis that I use the most in my coaching business, in my digital course, and in everything that I do, even in my day-to-day. Integrity is a big thing for me. Everything that I'm teaching my clients to do or coaching them on, it's super important to show up and do the same.

Neuro-linguistic programming is understanding the language of your mind so you can achieve your desired outcome consistently.

My uncle introduced me to NLP back in 2012. That's when I started starting these beautiful art and science. By the way, NLP was invented by recharge Richard Bandler and John Grinder back in the ‘80s. There were a couple of years where NLP has been utilized, and it's still being utilized. Oprah has utilized NLP. She has also gone to Tony Robbins’ events.

There are presidents like Bill Clinton who have utilized NLP. Athletes use NLP all the time. Even if they call it NLP or not, to be able to access immediate states right before they start a game, because maybe they have personal stuff going on, and suddenly they have to enter into a court and show up in a way that is empowered, to show up in a way that that's how a winner shows up in the court. They do that by anchoring in their bodies with a word or a specific sensory application in their bodies, those states that they want to feel right away. That's being used by a technique called anchoring, which is based on Neuro-Linguistic Programming. There are many things we even do now that are based on NLP, and we don't even know about it.

Mastering NLP And Hypnosis

I learned about NLP in 2012. Then I learned about these amazing training company that is the one that I've taken all my NLP trainings. The name is Empowerment Inc. A huge shout out to them. One of my clients actually got certified through them. She loves all NLP and energy things. They're good in terms of providing a holistic perspective on other students.

2012, I learned about NLP for the first time. I kept studying it. On 2017, I became certified as an NLP Practitioner, which is a four days training that's like the level one training. Two years later in 2019, I became certified as a Master Practitioner of NLP and hypnosis. That took two weeks of non-stop training and a test. There were a lot of things involved in it. That's the first time where I learned how to do a breakthrough session.

Let me tell you something. To be certified as a Master Practitioner of NLP, someone needs to do a breakthrough session to you, and you need to give a breakthrough session to someone. A breakthrough session is something that I do with all my coaching clients, even before we start coaching. It's a good way to reset their subconscious programming so they can start achieving the outcomes and they can start seeing clearly.

I did a breakthrough session in that training on two areas: romantic relationships and career. The people that made me in 2019 and now, I've gone through many changes in my life in a good sense. I found my Cody. I remember doing this breakthrough session on romantic relationships back in summer of 2019. I found Cody in November, and we got married.

Having a breakthrough session in career was a big game-changer because right after that, that's when I started to get paid clients. I was doing some free work. It was the first time I started to get paid clients, and my business started to become legit because you cannot have a business where you're providing free services. That was right after that breakthrough session, so I'm a huge believer in these tools and techniques because one, I have a greater understanding of how they work and how they can impact their mind. Two, because I've seen results in myself, in my clients, in my students. I know they work because I've seen it over and over.

That was in 2019. In 2020, I got my second certification as a coach. My second certification was as an NLP coach. Then in 2021, I got certified to train people of NLP. At this point, I haven't done it yet, but I can start my own event to certify people as NLP practitioners. As I mentioned, it has completely changed my life and the life of my clients. That’s how I built a coaching business out of, a lot of NLP and a lot of myself overcoming my limiting beliefs around doing something I love and generating money from it.

There are many people that believe that you cannot make money from something you love. That's a huge limiting belief. If you believe that, you are going to exactly see that yourself. You're going to make the decisions to avoid yourself from making money from something you love. That's why it's so important to even understand how you're seeing reality and identify those things are limiting you.

I see it all the time with my clients. I had two breakthrough sessions with two amazing clients that I'm starting new. In the breakthrough sessions, they had many takeaways, things that they have never thought through. All of us, including myself, we have these blind spots. Having this other person look at what you're saying in an objective way and noticing what are the limiting beliefs that you're bringing with your stories with your language? It is priceless.

Neuro-linguistic programming provides the tool to help people release phobias.

That's what NLP does. It helps you reprogram your mind. It's also a story of communication of how you communicate with yourself, how you communicate with others, and how you can rearrange that communication with self and others, so you can consistently achieve the goals that you want to walk towards.

NLP Techniques

NLP can be used in many ways. As I mentioned, releasing baggage, that's what I do in the breakthrough session, and that's something that has been proven to be highly efficient, also reprogramming habits. There are NLP techniques for every single thing. It is pretty impressive. There are NLP techniques for you to be able to stop snoozing your alarm. There are NLP techniques for you to be able to have control over not eating something that you know is unhealthy. There are NLP techniques to do every single thing basically.

Another way that I've used NLP is also releasing phobias. I had a client and she had this unreasonable phobia from pigeons. If you have ever experienced a phobia or something similar, this is basically an unreasonable fear that is not rooted on the present. You're living in the present but you're going back to a significant emotional event that you had in the past related to that phobia. You keep reliving it over and over. There is also baggage associated with it because when you have a phobia, your response is completely out of proportion to the event that you're experiencing, That's when you know there is baggage. That's also when you know there is a phobia. NLP also provides you the tool to help people release that phobia, which is what I did with my client in regards to pigeons.

With any one of my techniques, I always like to test. I recorded a video on everything. She didn't know, but I took her into a place where they sell pigeons. She was shocked and surprised that she was able to stand literally next to pigeons and not have a response out of proportion, not have a response with this unreasonable fear she used to experience. Honestly, when you experienced that, that's a huge shock to your system. The credibility that you start building in these techniques is huge.

That's why I'm talking about NLP. A lot of people know NLP, but a lot of people don't. I often get that question, “What is NLP? What is Neuro-Linguistic Programming? I know you talk about it, but I'm not familiar with it.” That's why I wanted to record an episode on this because knowing about NLP and even working with someone that does NLP is basically transforming your life. These techniques work, and they also allow you to develop a greater understanding of why you're experiencing certain things and how you can release them.

It takes skills and it takes you showing up every day and taking action, of course, because there are no quick fixes. You’ve got to be able to show up and work on that perspective that you have developed even with the techniques. In the case of a phobia, it was pretty quick. We did it together. The person has to be open to releasing the phobia. That's why I always say coaching and NLP and everything else is a do-with process. It’s not something I do to the person. It's something we do together because you’ve got be ready. You’ve got be willing to release too.

We did that in two sessions. After that, I was able to take her to the pigeons place, and she was totally shocked. After that, we had dinner. We celebrated a little bit because it was a big milestone for her. I wanted to talk about Neuro-Linguistic Programming. There are many ways to achieve similar outcomes, but my experience has taught me that NLP hypnosis and energy, a combination of those, and seeing the individual as a whole allows me as a coach and practitioner to create sustainable change, and also to teach others to do the same.

I hope you have a greater understanding now of what NLP or Neuro-Linguistic Programming means. If you're curious about it, you can reach out to me if maybe you're like, “Some of those things sound like I may need it.” You can schedule a Clarity Call. I hope you have more knowledge from this session, and hopefully you can use NLP to create a better change and a transformation in your life. Thank you so much for tuning in. If this was helpful, please share with friends and family. I appreciate you. I'll see you next time.
